Beginner Shortboard

Can a beginner start on a shortboard?
F.Y.I. - I know all about "surfing etiqutte" , popping up, and basics. I'm also quite athletic, if that helps. BTW, does it help in the long run?
does it help in the long run to first start on a shortboard?
Lessons are the only sensible way to start surfing, either from a professional instructor, or surfing family or friends who are experienced surfers. If you have pals to teach you, that can be great. There are way too many dangerous people in the water now, who THINK they can surf. Please don't join their ranks. The VERY LAST THING the rest of us experienced surfers want is people to take silly on-line advice, and go down to the beach, grab a surfboard, and go out and get in our way.
Most people start out best on long boards, but I have seen plenty of surfers start begin with a short board and master it in no time. It just tends to be more difficult. The bottom line is there are NO RULES as to what kind of surfboard you learn on. Certainly a longboard usually is more user friendly. In fact, there is no logical reason to NOT want a longboard, at least to start on. If you are thinking about picking a board based on how "cool" it is, you are making a big mistake. I have long boards and shorts boards, and ride whatever I feel like, depending on the conditions (and my mood).
Most professional instructors will rent you a board to learn on. Beginners shouldn't even think about buying a board until they master the basics, and decide they really want to keep on surfing. When you are finally ready, you should really think about buying a decent board, and avoiding popouts, and boards made in sweat shops in China, unless that's just all you can afford. At a good surf shop, they will help you pick the right board for your weight (height is fairly irrelevant), skill level, and local wave conditions. And don't forget, there are always used boards for sale in every surf shop. After 42 years of surfing, I still get my surfboard buying advice at good local shops in the places where I surf.

BIC 67 Surfboard Review
Beginner Surfer, What size board should I get?
Hi, I learned how to surf longboard in like 3 foot waves, but I really want to get into shortboards. I'm 5'7, 150 lbs, strong swimmer and pretty good with balance from snowboarding, and up till now I've been body boarding quite a bit.
anyways, does anyone have any advice on what size shortboard I should get? and roundpin or fish?
Oh and I'll probably be surfing about 3 days a week.
Thanks a bunch guys

OH btw, I live in huntington beach, CA, so waves are pretty good range of sizes but I think I'll stick to smaller ones at first
There are a couple different ways you could go. You could be bold and daring, and move right into short, performance board. You could make the change gradually, probably with a fun board or hybrid in the 7 foot range, or you could split the difference and get the best of both world's with a nice fat fish.
I hate to quote exact lengths or designs to somebody on line. It is bogus to think that any of us here can make the right call, unless we really know the HB wave conditions. I come from the east coast, and know that I would go to good local shop to get the best answer.
When I started in the 60s, we all moved from longboards down to short boards, and most did it gradually, with a shorter board each summer. But, I have seen lots of good surfers who start on a short board, so you need to really talk about it with good local folks in local shops.
Personally, I would go for the fish (if I had it all to do over again). Good luck!
