Drive Surf Board Need a California/surfing/Travelling expert. Please read and help to best of knowledge.?
Okay, So in about three months, I plan on road tripping from my current home, Denver, Colorado to California. (About San Diego, maybe LA?) But I'm trying to figure the cost. We're driving in a hybrid that gets roughly around 30-50 miles to the gallon. These are the things I want to know:
1: What is a rough estimate of Gas/four or five days food/and hotels?
2: How much does it cost to rent a beginners surf board around where we are going?
3: Is there a tourist place we can visit to see baby sea turtles? How much would that cost?
4: Any information on how to make this trip extremely cheap yet still fun?
5: Any surfing advice on how to surf?
I'm in Colorado Springs, but I'm from the Bay area. I just drove there 3 months ago actually, but gas prices have gone up. If you want to be in southern California, it would make more sense to go the southern route through New Mexico, but if you're wanting to go more in the San Fransisco area, for sight seeing (and the surfing is better) I would recommend going through Utah, and stopping in Vegas, because hotels are cheaper, and so is food, as long as you don't blow all your money on the strip. You get pretty good gas mileage, but account for gas being atleast 4.00 a gallon once you're in California, and along the way. In monterey, which isn't in Southern California, it's more in the bay area, is the monterey Bay Aquarium, which is the best aquarium around, it puts Denvers to shame, its amazing. It's about $20 maybe $25 a person to get in, but well worth it. There's also the long beach aquarium in long beach (duh), which has sea turtles I don't know if they have babies right now, but it's pretty nice, not quite Monterey Bay, but still pretty nice.
Surfing, you can usually rent a board between 20-40 depending on where your at, and some places will rent you a board and give you like an hour lesson for like 100 bucks, but it really depends on the beach, and what locals are there. Surfing isn't as easy as it looks, it's not like the movies. Best advice, take it slow. When you first try to get up on the board, don't try to stand up right away, lean up with your body, and then your knees, before you try your feet. Most people wont get it a few days, especially if there's no swells, and lots of people, which is why I was saying the Bay area is better, but it's still fun trying and if you can afford it lessons are kind of nice. Also, watch out for locals. If someone is already on a wave, it's like the rule of the water, you don't try and ride it, that's how you get jumped. haha.
As far as expenses, go to Walmart and fill up a cooler for the road. If you drink redbull and stuff, buy a case or whatever at Walmart, and get all your snacks for the road, maybe sandwich stuff, you'll end up spending way more than you want to if you go into the gas station every time you fuel up.
There are sites that will give you discounts if you book early, and it will save you a lot of money if you book your hotel in advance, and it will save you from running around looking for one with vacancy. If you're wanting to stay in the San Diego area, you're looking at close to a 100 a night for a hotel that doesn't service prostitutes... sad but true. Google hotels in San Diego, or wherever you choose to stop and even if you do it on your phone or something a few hours before you go, it will save you money opposed to walking in.

Surf Vacation
