Fish Surfboard Shortboard

What surfboard should I buy?
I am 5'5" 140-45 lbs. I am really athletic. I have been snowboarding and wakeboarding for years. I have also longboard skated for a couple years. I have a fish that is too big for me so I want a different board. Should I get a shortboard and what size?
I have been surfing for a year. I haven't gotten into turns yet cause i have been only doing it for a year and my old board was too big so i couldnt turn it. but as i said i have been snowboarding and wakeboarding for many years. so i think ill progress fast.
My first suggestion is to read the open and resolved YA surfing questions. This question has been asked enough times before, but there is really only one true answer.
Also, you left out some real important stuff like your skill level, and where you surf. Snowboarding and wakeboarding skills really don't translatre significantly to surfing. Your weight is significant, your height is fairly irrelevant, In your case, it may not be so much an issue of how long, but maybe how wide and how thick your old board is. And even on a log, turning is pretty elementary.
This question comes up a lot on YA Surfing, and it is impossible to answer it accurately on-line. Although I am sure you will get lots of "advice" the real BEST ANSWER is to go to a good local surf shop and discuss your skill level, your size and local wave conditions with the folks there. they will give you much better info than ANYBODY out here in cyberspace. You should really think about buying a decent board, and avoiding popouts , and boards made in sweat shops in China, unless that's just all you can afford. And don't forget, there are always used boards for sale in every surf shop. After 42 years of surfing, I still get my surfboard buying advice at good local shops in the places where I surf.
And, I know there are lots of nice kids who want to share information with you on line. But don't take the advice from youngsters, who may know even less than you do about surfing, a surfboard is a big investment.
Anybody, on-line, who gives specific advice on what size board someone should buy is foolish. Anyone who takes that advice is more foolish.Good luck!

Am I doing this shortboard popup correctly?
Fish surfboard vs thruster (shortboard)?
I live in an area where there are very small waves (knee high). I want to surf with a thruster (shortboard) but think it would be easier to use a fish due to the poor conditions. I hear that a fish is just like a shortboard and performs similar to one, but is meant more for smaller waves. Is this right? Thx
I don't have a clue what your skill level is, so this is tough to answer. It is possible to ride a performance board in little surf. Lots of folks do it all of the time. You don't get as much out of the waves, but it is still possible. Now, with that said, I have to agree that a fish is pretty great in smaller, mushier waves. I'm an east coast guy, and most of the summer, the best I have to look forward to is usually knee to waist waves. I ride a fish, and think it is fantastic. It was custom made for me, so it's far bigger than most guys would want, but I'm fat and 56, and it suits my just fine.
I have been surfing for 42 years, and I have ridden fish for a number of years. I don't know where you stand skill level-wise, so I don't know if you are ready to ride a fish. they definitely are tough to learn on. With knee high waves, you might be better off riding a fun shape/mini-mal if you want less board than a long board. There are some great, really loose designs of 'fun boards' out there to look at.
Go to a good local surf shop, and talk to the folks there. they know the local breaks far better than we do out here in 'cyberspace'. they can give you the best advice on what to get that matches your skill level and the waves at your local break.
