Nose Rider Used
I have a question for Dressage Riders?
My horse moves like a hunter...on the forehand,long and low,headset etc.. and I would like to start getting more into dressage. I did some low level when I was younger...and now I just want my horse to move CORRECTLY and actually use himself rather than just plod around with his nose practically in the dirt.
So, other than sitting back more and driving him forward with my leg to get him off the forehand are there any other things i can do? When I ask him to round he always wants to put his head down instead of lifting and carrying himself
advice? exercises i could do with him?
i know i need a trainer lol believe me... I am looking for a reasonably priced one in my area
I do dressage and I used to have this problem with my TB.
I moved him to a new barn in the middle of Nov. and since then we've been working on vertical & lateral flexion, backing, disengaging the hindquarters, etc-
Starting at the halt, gently flex your reins and even if your horse only drops his head an inch, still immediately release & rub him. [[ What did a mare first do to her foal? She didn't pat him, now did she? ]] Timing is key so as soon as he drops his head, release & rub. Do this several times at the halt then you can move on to the walk, etc. [[ Do it at the beginning & end of your rides along with lateral flexion ]] Now, be sure not to let your horse nose dive down, if he does, slightly bump him up. When he begins to stay in a frame at the walk, trot, etc leave him alone! Be as still as possible. But when he rises his head, gently flex your reins and make him lower it again.
Lateral flexion [[ it's like the 'carrot stretches' you do with your horse while on the ground ]] helps to loosen up your horse as well. So at the halt, gently bring your horse's head around to left left & then the right. Do this at the beginning and end of your ride.
When you do vertical flexion, you should do it 10 times, sometimes 20, or sometimes even more. With lateral flexion you should do it in sets of around 10, though sometimes more.
Another great exercise is disengaging the hindquarters. It's a little difficult to explain, so ask your trainer [[ when you get one ]]. Backing & disengaging the hindquarters will help loosen the hind end to help your horse use his hindquarters more, thus improving his movement.
I could probably get a video of these exercises and put it up on YouTube is they are too hard to understand!
