What martial art should I learn?
And is it too late? I'm a twenty year old girl.
I'm a small, thin but athletic build. I build muscle very quickly, have sharp reflexes, am physically strong for my size and am very flexible - I'm a dancer of 17 years.
I also do yoga, pilates and I surf.
I've always been interested in martial arts (my uncle was a Karate champion) but have always been intimidated by all the choices! What do you think would suit me? Any recommendations?

I want to learn a martial art mostly for self-defense. Young girl in the big city haha you know how it is! But maintaining/improving my fitness levels would be a bonus - though I'm already pretty active.
How good each martial art is is not based on the art itself, but the person studying it, so it is very helpful that you added your build.
I've been studying a comprehensive mixed martial art for 5 years now, and i can honestly say that its been the best move of my life. In the past two years i've started teaching aswell so I'll see if i can help.
Unfortunately nowadays competitions are what are important to people, so if you join a class then chances are you'll be learning a sport version of whatever you are looking for. Tae Kwon Do and Karate classes seem to be the worst for this.
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't go to classes of these styles though. I'm not so keen on Tae Kwon Do. It seems to be whatever Tae Kwon Do can offer me, there's another art that can do it better. However, I believe that Karate (depending on which style) can be one of the most complete single style disciplines if taught well. There are also some keys to be able to tell if the class is sport or not:
If the prectitioners bounce while sparring then it's most likely a sport style. bouncing may add speed, but it takes away from stability and there are moments during your bounce where you're vulnerable to almost everything. It also gives away your timing.
If during sparring you spar for points then you wont learn much about an actual fight. For example i'd let somebody punch my body and glance (Which can score a point) if it lets me into the opponents head. In a points match the fight would be stopped after that first point was scored.
Anyway i'm going off on a tangent.
I believe that to find a martial art that suits you the best and gives you what you want you have to search your local area. Dont be afraid to go to classes for only one lesson to try the styles and the sensei's out, and when you do find a good class dont stop your search there. the only way to be a more complete combatant is to keep looking for new styles to learn. Even if they dont offer you any new techniques (Like Tae Kwon Do for me) then you still get the knowledge of what people who learn that styles strengths and weaknesses are.
and finally, for if you just wanted a short answer, a list of styles to test and try that i believe to be most suited to you.
Shorinji Kenpo
- A good balance of striking and grabbing. Brilliant martial art for anyone to learn.
Shotokan Karate(Not Sport)
- Quick and powerful. This form of Karate utilises strong stances and has a small but well practised technique list for any situation.
Tai Chi/Tai Ki
- Though it starts being trained slow, once you are more of an advanced grade you train it at combat speed. One of the best martial arts in my opinion, but only once you're good enough at it. Also in the higher grades teaches vital points striking.
Kyusho Bubushi
- The art of striking vital points. It's ideal as it teaches you to strike the vital areas of your opponent. All opponents will have them and the more muscley and bigger somebody is then the bigger their pressure points will be. So being small and thin actually puts you at an advantage.
P.s. Any style that you train hard in will keep you physically and mentally fit, if they are being taught well.

I really want to go on an inexpensive trip in Europe... where can I stay? Couch surf?
Hey
I'm hoping to go on a trip between April and September this year somewhere in Europe, I really don't mind where as long as it doesn't cost me much! I've heard about couch surfing but I don't know anyone who has done it. Have you done it? Is it safe? How does it work!? I'm a poor art student :p so it seems like a good way for me to get about, see a lot of places and spent very little!
Hi, couchsurfing is GREAT!!! Yeah,I'm a member, have been for a few years now. It really is a fantastic idea and the vast majority of people have an amazing time.
When you click on someone's profile, it'll show you comment left for them, by other people (those who have stayed with them/hosted them.) these comments will give you a good idea what that persons like. people on the site are very honest, so if someone has had a bad experience with a particular person, they'll state that on the persons profile. bad comments cannot be removed either, so this really is a great way of making sure someone is safe enough to stay with.
an extra feature couchsurfing has is, if you're an experienced host, you can verify yourself by paying a small fee. i'm not sure exactly sure what verify means, but i presume they carry out some checks to make sure you actually are who you say you are. not many people are verified, because of the charge, but if someone is, you can be certain they'd be safe to stay with.
it's really straightfoward the way it works. you basically do a search, for whichever area you want to stay. it'll bring up a list of people willing to host you, and you look through their profiles until you find someone you think you'd have a good time with! if you find someone, you just leave them a personal message and depending on the person, they'll either agree or disagree! it really is simple. check out the website and all the info you'll need is on there.
