Surfboard for 12 year old boy?

Does anyone no a suitable surfboard or adivce for my 12 year old son.
He is 7stone 8pounds and 5ft 2.
He has hired a soft board plenty of times and is very confident on it and wants a hardboard to progress on.
Also one that will last him a good few years as he gets bigger.
Can anyone help?
Oh for got to says i want one he can start to turn on. Because the softboards don't really turn.

first of all, congrats to your son for entering the world of surfing!! you should too if you haven't already! surfing is an absolutely amazing experience and is very addictive, but in a good way :)

anyhoo, its good that he has been learning on a soft board, they are great for building confidence in the water and getting a feel for the wave (not to mention giving him a taste of it's power and beauty!)

if you were to buy a board for him, i'd get him an epoxy mini-mal. these are great for improvers, as they are light, easy to maneuver, and pretty stable. (epoxy boards are made from foam and fiberglass, mini mal just means it is between shortboard and longboard). i would get him a board around 7'-7'6''. mini mals are also great to give him an idea whether he wants to specialise in either shortboarding or longboarding (both of which are extremely popular in the surfing world!)

i bought an epoxy 7'4'' mini mal about 3 years ago and it is still in great condition. i use it all the time when i cant decide whether i want to take my longboard or shortboard out!

just one thing. surfing is pretty dangerous so if he is going to go surfing in unknown waters, ask a local about the break, in case there are reefs, rocks or sandbanks hidden under the surf which can be dangerous both to him and his board!

anyway i hope this helped! i hope to see your son AND you in the lineup!! happy surfing :) xxx

SAW OFF THE NOSE - INT SOFTBOARDS

what is the best surfboard for me?

i have been teaching myself to surf for about 6 years every summer. I have been using softboards and minimals and now i want to move on! Last year i started taking out my friends fibreglass mid length board which i was fine with and now i am thinking of buying a board, what would you suggest i look at?
I'm 16 and about 5'4.

If you are already pretty comfortable with stuff in the funboard class, you could easily make a transition to s short performance board. I don't know what type of break you surf, but fish have become exceedingly popular, and they are very versatile.

Go to a good local surf shop and talk to the surfers there. They know the breaks that you surf at, better than we do. they will help you find the right board for your size, skill level, local wave conditions and your budget.

I have been surfing for 42 years, and almost always gotten good advice from the folks at the surf shop, as long as I am honest with them about my skill level and what I want out of a surf board. Good luck!
