Surfer Longboard Shortboard Any tips for longboard surfers who started shortboarding?
I guess it is rare for a longboarder to wanna start shortboarding but when I am on my longboard I feel like my body wants to race and do snaps and faster manuevers like shortboarders. My "shortboard" is actually a 7'3". I took it out twice and I'm having a hard time getting used to the paddling and duck diving. I shoulda known that being on a shortboard has more "drag"..what kind of exercises can I do to build up my arms/shoulders/core outside of the water to make it easier in the water? Or should I just get out more often to get used to it?
Hi, your "shortboard" actually sounds more like a funboard (aka mini mal) if it's 7'3". You're likely gonna find it is hard to duck dive a board of that length. The paddling should be just fine, a surfboard that's over 7' should be buoyant enough that you don't have trouble with paddling speed. I'd say just stick with it and keep paddling as much as you can when you are out. Even if it's a small day go out and paddle. When you're outside between sets, rather than sitting and waiting for the next set, paddle some more, feel the burn
I don't think it's rare for someone who has learned on a longboard to want to start moving down in size. It's quite the opposite, as your surfing progresses, you'll want to challenge yourself with more maneuvers. I still like the grace of a longboard ride, and some days that is what I choose to do, other days I feel like the shortboard.

The Top 4 Benefits of Longboard Surf
Surfing using a long board is a better way to learn how to surf. Although it's possible to use the short board for learning surfing, it would demand a much longer time frame for you to learn it and also you would have to face such overwhelming frustration. Longboard surfs would allow you to learn the skill in an easy way in so many ways.
First thing is that longboards would allow you more room for mistakes than the short ones. Surfing beginners don't have yet the conditioned shoulders for them to handle the short boards. Conditioning of the shoulders comes with time and a lot of practice. But paddling in a longboard surf is a bit challenging. But all in all, it is still much easier to handle than a shortboard.
Second thing, long boards are more stable than the short ones. You might find it difficult to maneuver during the first few times, but long board surf still has the stability you would need while still starting. This is especially needed when doing the pop up and in doing the proper and varied stances on the board. Long boards can provide you more time to get on your feet (although not too long) and would let you have a comfortable foot placement with less stress than the short boards.
Third, these longboards will allow you to enjoy the most from the small waves that you encounter during the first few tries. The gentle beginner's waves are good for longboard surf--beginners will often have small, clean and slow breaking waves in the beginning. Longboards are ideal for such conditions because they have the ability to float really well and the ability to catch small waves that smaller boards cannot.
Fourth, longboards would let you catch the waves you like. Many first timers are often blinded by the coolness of the short boards since they are most often fashionable to the sight. This is one of the most common mistakes committed by most surfers and will just lead into great frustration in the water. Don't forget that surfing is about how to catch waves. If you are still in the first phase of learning, you have to focus first on how to ride a wave the right way. What you like is to experience riding a clean wave even if it is small. If you become flawless in doing this, the fun you experience will keep you driven to do more. After enough time and practice, you can switch to smaller boards if you wish. But while still starting out, longboard surf is all you need.
Its paddle-friendly structure, stability and small-wave catching mechanism makes long boards recommended for neophytes in surfing. Practice and patience are all that are required of you and sooner that short board you want will be yours.
