I believe it started in my city in the middle 70s, during an alice cooper concert and the crowd was huge. at the very front up against the barrier separating the crowd from the band, there were these three people very drunk and shouting vulgarities at the band, I saw the crowd pick up these drunks and just start passing them towards the back to get rid of them, so it started as a way to get rid of rowdies, now its for fun.
