sunrise at Haleakala?
my family and i will be heading to Maui this summer and a lot people have recommended seeing the sun rise at the top of Haleakala. My question is, what is the best way to get there? rent a car or take a tour? also, i am traveling with my parents and lil brother. My mother is not an athletic type of person, is there any way the tour van can get us up and drive us back down without having to bike on the way back?
and if i may ask what are other great things to do on Maui that doesnt require too much hiking?
I have always driven up. It is not a hard drive, though it may be intimidating for some drivers, as there are lots of twists & turns & you drive it in the dark. There are many tours that will give you transportation both up & down Haleakala, so you don't need to worry about that. Other things to do on Maui: the drive to Hana is at least as important as the destination. Hana is a lovely, small community on the north eastern end of Maui. To get there, you drive a narrow, winding road that will give you the most incredible views of the ocean, cliffs, mountains, waterfalls , etc. Plan to devote one full day to this trip. Io Valey is very pretty & worth a quick trip. There are some wineries & alavendar farm in upcountry Maui that you can check out on your way back down fro Halekala. Lahaina is a very picturesque town with a lot of history, good restaurants & shopping, & great people watching. Be sure to see the huge banyan tree next to the Pioneer Inn.
Oh - and be sure to dress warm for sunrise on Haleakala.

Usually the are bland American cars, not quite as much as more, as the occasional Toyota or Hyundai slip into the mix.

* I have gotten one as a rental. Mostly I get a Standard or Midsize and get an Impala or Taurus. Once the engine in my Taurus started burning oil and Enterprise gave me a Venture.
I got the Town Car because they were out of Impalas in Maui, some people thought we were the limo to pick them up from the hotel.
Whatever vehicle manufacturer gives them the best deal for their fleets are the ones they will have foe rentals
